The Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana is a five-day stage race in eastern Spain. This year will be an emotional edition after all the destruction caused by the floods in the region at the end of October. The leader’s jerseys will all have place names on them of villages and cities that suffered in this disaster.

The race starts on Wednesday 5 February with a team time trial of 34 kilometers, a rare occurrence in pro cycling these days.

Sports director Piotr Wadecki said: “We planned a recon of that team time trial course on Monday because in a time trial every second counts. A few seconds can make a huge difference. We want to show how strong we are as a team and go full gas from day one. We will try to go for stage wins and for a good result in the general classification with Milan and Mark.”

Another team travels to Oman for the one-day race Muscat Classic, followed by the Tour of Oman: two races the team has never done before.

Muscat Classic & Tour of Oman Preview :

Xabier Mikel Azparren, Matteo Badilatti, Marcel Camprubí, David de la Cruz, Damien Howson, Giacomo Nizzolo and Harm Vanhoucke.

The Muscat Classic on Friday 7 February is always an unpredictable race with the climb of Al Jissah (1,1km/9,3%) at six kilometers from the finish.

Sports director Alex Sans Vega said: “The Muscat Classic is an interesting one because it’s a course that can have to different scenarios. It is a race to be on the attack in the last hour of the race, but it will be difficult for any team to have this race under control.”

The Tour of Oman starts on Saturday 8 February. It is a five-day stage race with opportunities for the fast men of the bunch, the puncheurs and the climbers. The general classification is usually decided on Green Mountain on the final day but Eastern Mountain on day three also poses a nice challenge for the strong climbers.

Alex Sans Vega continued: “In Oman our main goal is to have a top ten in the general classification, so we lined up many climbers to reach this objective. There are two mountain finishes but also two potential sprints where we hope to play Giacomo Nizzolo who is a previous stage winner here.”
