Pidcock second on stage 6 and takes maglia ciclamino

Tom Pidcock added another second place finish to his strong and consistent riding in the Tirreno Adriatico. Because of this consistency the British rider is also the new leader in the points classification. He moves up to sixth place in the general classification where David De La Cruz moves up to eighth with one stage to go.

The last major mountain stage took the peloton from Cartoceto to Frontignano over 163 kilometers. There was a breakaway of eight riders but Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team contributed to keeping the gap under control. Damien Howson, Mark Donovan, Nick Zukowsky and David De La Cruz worked hard and with the final 7,6-kilometer climb coming up the gap was down to just a minute.

On the final climb Tom Pidcock stayed onto the wheel of Juan Ayuso and matched several attacks of the Spaniard. At three kilometers from the line he had to let go but kept fighting hard in the small group in pursuit. He finished in second place, taking valuable bonus seconds and moving up from place 15 to place 6.

Tom Pidcock said: “My ceiling is higher and I just don’t know my level. I’m frustrated with myself and especially after how well the guys rode for me today. Ayuso was the strongest but I think I could have stayed with him to fight for the win on another day. My ambition was to go for a stage win this year in Tirreno Adriatico but I have to be happy with two second places. I am also happy because of how I saw the team work, They were all really strong. We have one more stage to go and David and me are now in the top ten where we want to stay. You live and learn as they say.”

Pidcock is not the only Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team rider in the top ten of the general classifiation of this seven-day World Tour race in Italy. David De La Cruz started the week with a strong performance in the time trial and continued to ride with the best in the challenging stages that followed. He is now eigth in the general classification.

David De La Cruz said: “It’s been a very tough Tirreno Adriatico this week with the weather and the hard stages but as a team we can be proud. I am also proud of myself and the level I have. It gives me great morale to ride with the best again. My highlight was how we ride as a team. We show as a non WorldTour-team that we can ride with the best. We showed how strong we are and I hope this shows race organizers we deserve our place in the biggest races.”
