De la Cruz Claims Spanish National TT Champion Title
David de la Cruz has been crowned the new Spanish Time Trial Champion after powering his SCOTT Plasma RC to victory this Friday, June 21st, in Galapagar, Spain.
21 June 2024.
In his second attempt at the title, after finishing runner-up in 2021, the seasoned Spaniard claimed the gold medal after completing the 33.4km course in 38 minutes and 33 seconds, finishing over half a minute faster than silver medalist Markel Beloki.
This victory marks the first National Champion Title for the Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team in the 2024 season and the first win for De la Cruz in the colors of our Swiss-registered team.
“It’s amazing! It’s the second time I’ve competed in the Time Trial at the Spanish Champs after taking silver in 2021, missing the win by less than a second. I came here with the aim to get the victory and did my absolute best. During the race, I kept telling myself that today had to be the day,” said an ecstatic De La Cruz.
After a strong performance at the Tour de Suisse, where he secured an impressive 8th place in the closing ITT, De la Cruz was driven to claim the TT National Champion stripes, having come so close three years ago.
“The bike felt so smooth and fast. I used a 60 chainring, and Keku (Joaquin Sobrino, Q36.5 Pro Cycling team mechanic) ensured the bike was perfect. I have to thank the entire team, especially the staff and my teammates here at the championships who supported me immensely. The vibes were great, and I feel super happy and proud to be the new Spanish National Time Trial Champion. It’s going to be amazing to wear the Spanish Champion jersey in TTs over the next year!” concluded De la Cruz.
This victory is the first National Champion title for David de la Cruz and his sixth win as a professional cyclist. Teammate Xabier Mikel Azparren also delivered a solid performance, finishing in 7th place.
